In collaboration with the New England Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC), the RI Council on Problem Gambling Presents:

Title: Gambling Below the Surface: Death by Suicide

DATE: March 31, 2026 from 12:00pm-1:30pm ET

CEUs: Eligible for 1.5 CEs (RI-NASW)

Trainer: Mark Van Der Maas, PhD., Ryan Dimeglio, LCSW, LCADC

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Death by suicide is one of the most devastating and costly potential consequences of problem gambling. Unfortunately, due to a number of factors, there is very little data available that would make it possible to estimate the number of deaths by suicide where gambling is a contributing factor. This presentation details an attempt to find gambling-related cases of death by suicide from information in the National Violent Death Reporting System, which currently collects data on all officially recorded violent deaths in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The presenters will discuss characteristics that were common among gambling-related cases including those related to demographics, alcohol use, financial problems, and relationship difficulties. Reflections on how to better capture the impacts of gambling on death by suicide, as well as implications for clinicians, will also be discussed.

Objectives:

Participants will learn how to:

  • To refine knowledge of the connection between gambling and death by suicide
  • To make recommendations on how administrative datasets can better collect information on gambling-related harm.
  • To educate practitioners on the implications of this data when working with clients with problem gambling.
